Mélange

The frontend prototype for Mélange makes it easy for users to add and remove content from various sources and style that content while they're at it, effectively allowing them to make collages with online media. When I started this project, I lacked the necessary skills to make Mélange work. While I did have some experience using MooTools, I had only used it for its effects.

Initially I wantend to create a frontend and backend, but as this project went on, I decided to focus on the frontend. Because of the multiple aspects I wanted to test, I split the project into smaller problems. First, I wanted to test how users might arrange elements on a canvas and later on create elements. Because I wanted to use Flickr and YouTube as content sources, I had to use AJAX.

Combining these into one big prototype turned out to be a lot trickier, mainly because of all the finetuning in the interface. Even though it lacks a good number of features, it should be able to give people an impression of what Mélange is capable of. In the prototype, a user can open a dock and access the individual sources to add content to a canvas. Double clicking or holding before moving will put an element on top.
